Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher learning that were established before 1964 to serve the educational needs of the Black community.
Prior to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Blacks were not allowed to attend most colleges and universities in the United States. Separate institutions of higher learning were established to give Blacks the opportunity to further their education and develop the skills and training needed to thrive in American society.
