HBCU Players Fare Well In 2010 NFL Draft

One of the frequent misconceptions that we hear with regard to HBCUs and athletics, is that if a student-athlete attends an HBCU, they won’t get the exposure needed to make it to the professional level. While it is true that most HBCUs get limited media exposure, few people realize that pro sports scouts are often present at HBCU games. If a player has talent, they will find him (or her).

The 2010 NFL Draft was just completed and as of April 25, 2010, two players were drafted and 10 have been signed as free agents. Collectively, this is a tremendous showing. Congratulations to the following players:

  • Phillip Adams, DB, South Carolina State – drafted by the San Francisco 49ers
  • Rafael Bush, DB, South Carolina State – undrafted free agent to the Atlanta Falcons
  • Junior Galette, DE, Stillman College – undrafted free agent to the New Orleans Saints
  • E.J. Morton Green, WR, Morgan State University – undrafted free agent to the Green Bay Packers
  • Ramon Harewood, OT, Morehouse Colege – drafted by the Baltimore Ravens
  • Phillip Kirkland, WR, Bethune-Cookman University – undrafted free agent to the New York Jets
  • Quinn Porter, RB, Stillman College – undrafted free agent to the Green Bay Packers
  • LeRoy Vann, KR, Florida A&M University – undrafted free agent to the SF 49ers
  • Sirjo Welch, DB, Kentucky State University – undrafted free agent to the New Orleans Saints
  • Terrell Whitehead, DB, Norfolk State University – undrafted free agent to the Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Oliver Young, WR, South Carolina State – undrafted free agent to the Carolina Panthers
  • Marcell Young, DB, Jackson State University – undrafted free agent to the New Orleans Saints

Again, congratulations to you all. Continue to work hard in training camp and we hope to see you on the roster this season.
